Grapevine Group Mackay has welcomed a $20,000 funding boost thanks to the success of 2016 Run for MI Life events.
“We cannot do what we do without the support of Run for MI Life, Grapevine Group president, Laurence Manning said.
“They have always been an incredible supporter of Grapevine Group.
“It’s this kind of funding which enabled us to do what we do.
“We have delivered the safeTALK program to more than 3200 people in the Mackay region and have handed out more than 106,000 Grapevine support cards.
“The information cards were first printed in 2009 in response to the need for access to information about where to go and who to contact for help. Since then we have handed them out at countless community events and made them available for professionals to hand them out to clients and those seeking help.
“This is important information getting to those who need it most and empowering the people of our community so they know how to identify and help someone who might be at risk.
“It’s what saves lives.”
Run for MI Life founder Jo Shanks said the organisation was proud of the partnership between the two organisations.
“I believe in education and awareness and Grapevine Group has given us a strong foundation for that in the Mackay region,” Mrs Shanks said.
“Having also done the ASIST program now, as well, I am a great advocate for these programs.
“This funding helps deliver real solutions.
“We don’t want people thinking there is nothing they can do. They can do something and there are things we can all be doing to be empowered and educated – and being able to help someone when they need it.”
Mrs Shanks said 2017 would be a massive year for Run For MI Life with six fun runs planned throughout the state for October 15.
“We started this event in 2014 in the name of our brother, uncle and friend, Matthew Ivory, who took his own life on October 19, 2012,” she said.
“It soon grew to three events – in Walkerston, Glenden and Moranbah – and this year we will have runs in Walkerston, Bowen, Moranbah, Airlie Beach, Glenden and Brisbane.
“Registration opened in April, to coincide with our annual Remembrance Journey and there are still plenty of opportunities for people to get involved – right around the state.”
Mrs Shanks said to be a part of one of this year’s Mackay Sugar Run For MI LIfe fun runs – as a competitor, sponsor or volunteer – go to and follow the links for information.
She said the other big event on the group’s calendar was just around the corner, with the annual High Tea to be held at Ocean International on July 2. Details also available at the Run For MI Life website.
