This week, Grapevine Group announced that 6000 people have now completed suicide prevention training in Mackay, Isaac and the Whitsunday regions and they want more to do the free life-saving training.

The Mackay Regional Council has been the largest contributor to the training numbers with 289 of their staff undergoing safeTALK training.

“From humble beginnings Grapevine has grown into a key organisation providing a much needed service to our community,” said Mayor Greg Williamson.

“We are exceptionally proud of the passion, drive and commitment of the team at Grapevine and the outcome of their work is well demonstrated in our council workforce.”

Even with this impressive milestone, Grapevine president Debbie Knight is determined as ever to maintain the momentum.

“While Grapevine’s volunteers have incredible spirit and dedication, this milestone has only been achieved through a dedicated community pulling together to protect as many as possible from the devastating impacts of suicide.

“And we certainly couldn’t have reached this milestone without organisations committed to suicide prevention and providing safeTALK training to their staff, volunteers and teammates.

“We’ve had dozens of businesses put staff through the training to learn the signs of suicide and how to help,” Ms Knight said.

Dave Hackett, General Manager at DGH Engineering said that when safeTALK training was introduced to their workplace, staff were keen to do the training.

“DGH’s commitment to suicide prevention is obvious in our staff’s enthusiasm to jump onboard and we’re so proud to make a difference and be able to add our names to the list of organisations which have done the life- saving training,” Mr Hackett said.

“Everyone has the potential to save lives.”

The free training is provided by qualified safeTALK trainers and organisations can sign up for private group safeTALK sessions.

Grapevine trainers are also available on-site to businesses, sports and community organisations.

Conveniently, Grapevine has devised a free smart phone app which can be used to sign up for safeTALK and find local help and services.

It is an important suicide prevention resource in the hands of every person who needs help or needs to help someone else.
