The old saying goes, ‘information is power’, and Grapevine Group’s new campaign, launched to coincide with Mental Health Week all about empowering its local community.

With the help of 12 local businesses and organisations, Grapevine has launched its new Help-A-Mate Hub initiative.

Campaign coordinator Debbie Knight said the aim of the campaign was to ensure members of the community who needed to access the information cards, had every opportunity to do so – making them available at a time and location to suit.

“We have been overwhelmed by the support from local businesses and how willing they were to come on board and offer their locations as hubs,” Ms Knight said.

“This is all about making sure information about where people can go if they, or someone they know, needs help. The cards are inconspicuous but they have good local information on them – and the fact that it’s local is vital!

“We are calling on the public to collect bundles of Help-a-Mate cards which contain the local list of life-saving suicide prevention resources. The public can then hand cards onto their colleagues, customers, team mates, volunteers or friends.”

Ms Knight said the 12 Help-A-Mate Hubs were located at:

  • BB Print, Paget
  • Triple M Mackay & Whitsundays
  • Hit 100.3
  • Nine
  • Run For MI Life (October 15 Run)
  • Souths Leagues Club
  • Mt Pleasant Centre
  • Caneland Central
  • Mass Nutrition
  • Barber Jo’s at Walkerston
  • YIRS One Stop Youth Shop
  • Autocorner

Grapevine president Laurence Manning thanked the businesses and organisations which had committed to being a part of the Help-A-Mate Hub campaign.

“These businesses, and the people who made the decision to be a part of this campaign, are making a real commitment to sharing vital, life-saving information,” Mr Manning said.

“All too often as individuals and as a community, we feel helpless and wonder what we can do. Well, this is something we can all do and it takes local information out into the local community – to those who need it most.”
